LED Flashlights

thumbnailCAQVO0ZOLED flashlights have several advantages over conventional incandescent lamps. For one thing, they don’t have a filament that will burn out, so they last much longer. Additionally, their small plastic bulbs make them a lot more durable. But the main advantage is efficiency. A much higher percentage of the electrical power is going directly to generating light, which cuts down on the electricity demands considerably.
Up until recently, LEDs were too expensive to use for most lighting applications because they’re built around advanced semiconductor material. The price of semiconductor devices has plummeted over the past decade, however, making an LED flashlight a more cost-effective lighting option for a wide range of situations. While they may be more expensive than incandescent lights up front, their lower cost in the long run can make them a better buy.

Proprietary Eponyms

maglite-flashlightsWhen you have a runny nose, do you reach for a facial tissue, or do you grab a Kleenex? How about during the days leading up to Christmas, when you’re wrapping gifts with transparent cellophane adhesive tape? You probably just call it Scotch tape. These are both examples of proprietary eponyms, or specific brand names that have become synonymous with the generic products themselves.

In most cases, a word becomes a proprietary eponym because it is widely used and trusted by a majority of the public. Such is the case with Maglite flashlights. Kids play tag in the dark with the help of a Maglite, and policemen shine a Maglite in car windows to get the driver’s attention. This brand has become an institution in our culture, and our very language has been adapted as a result.
